Performance Characteristics of PTFE

PTFE plastic is valued for its ability to perform reliably under extreme conditions. It offers excellent resistance to nearly all chemicals and solvents, making it ideal for corrosive environments. With a continuous operating temperature range of up to 500°F (260°C), PTFE maintains its physical integrity under intense heat.

Its very low coefficient of friction gives it excellent wear properties, and its non-stick surface resists buildup of debris or residue. PTFE is also a strong electrical insulator and maintains stability in outdoor or UV-exposed environments. Certain grades meet FDA requirements for food and pharmaceutical use, broadening its range of applications.

Available Forms of PTFE

Emco stocks a wide variety of PTFE product forms to meet diverse application needs. One of the most commonly requested formats is Teflon sheet PTFE, available in multiple thicknesses and sizes. Other forms include rods, tubes, and films. Both skived and molded sheets are available depending on the material grade and tolerance required. For projects requiring precision or non-standard dimensions, cut-to-size services are available.

Grades and Fillers

PTFE is offered in several types to meet different performance goals.

  • Virgin (Unfilled) PTFE: Offers the highest purity and provides the lowest coefficient of friction. It is ideal for applications requiring excellent electrical insulation, chemical resistance, and minimal contamination, such as in semiconductor or medical equipment.
  • Filled PTFE Grades: These grades offer enhanced mechanical strength, better wear resistance, and improved dimensional stability. Common fillers include glass fiber, which increases stiffness and reduces wear; carbon, which improves compressive strength and conductivity; graphite, which enhances lubricity and lowers friction; molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂), which contributes to wear resistance; and mineral compounds tailored for applications that demand added load-bearing capacity.
  • Blended PTFE Materials: These are formulated by combining PTFE with other thermoplastics such as PPS or Acetal. The result is a material that offers a combination of properties suited for specialized environments, including applications that involve mechanical stress, exposure to harsh chemicals, or the need for improved machinability.

PTFE Applications

PTFE plastic is used in a wide range of critical applications. These include gaskets and seals, bushings, slide plates, valve seats, and electrical insulators. Teflon sheet PTFE is often chosen for its stability and chemical resistance in sealing or lining applications. In the semiconductor industry, PTFE components help maintain clean processing environments. In pump and valve systems, it provides long-lasting wear resistance under high pressure and temperature.
