Polyetherimide (PEI), also trademarked as Ultem®, is an amorphous, amber-to-transparent thermoplastic. Rated for continuous use in temperatures up to 356° F (180° C), it also features high tensile strength along with good flame and chemical resistance.
Ultem PEI is often used instead of polysulfone and is commonly specified for aerospace, automotive, medical, and packaging applications. The glass filled grade, Ultem 2000, offers increased strength, stiffness and dimensional stability while maintaining many of the useful characteristics of basic Ultem. The glass reinforcement yields a product with an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio and increased tensile strength. Glass-filled grades appear tan or greenish in color and are available in limited sheet and rod sizes.
Additional formulations (i.e., carbon filled) and variants within these grades (resistance to wear, chemical, high heat, stains; static dissipative, and hydrolytically stable) are available to meet specific application demands. An Emco Industrial Plastics representative can help you choose the correct material to meet your application needs.
