Same base polymer, two very different personalities. Here's how to tell them apart — and pick the right one before you cut the first sheet.

When engineers and buyers start speccing polyethylene, one of the first forks in the road is density: low-density (LDPE) or high-density (HDPE). Both are chemically similar — both resist moisture and a wide range of chemicals, and both are easy on the wallet compared to engineering-grade plastics. But the differences in molecular structure translate into real differences in stiffness, strength, and the applications each one is built for.

The Core Difference: Molecular Density

The "density" in each name isn't just marketing — it describes how tightly the polymer chains are packed.

LDPE has a branched molecular structure. The branching keeps chains from packing closely together, which results in a softer, more flexible, more translucent material.

HDPE has a linear molecular structure with minimal branching. The chains pack tightly, producing a denser, stiffer, more opaque material with greater tensile strength.
