ABS is an economical engineering plastic that is easy to machine and fabricate. ABS is an ideal material for structural applications when impact resistance, strength, and stiffness are required. ABS thermoplastic fire-rated sheet can be used as a base material for making of glare shields and side panel backing for airplanes.
Boltaron® 6800E sheet, extruded from a proprietary thermoplastic alloy, meets stringent FAR 25.850(a) flammability requirements for aircraft interiors. It also satisfies UL 94 V0 flame test criteria. Its resistance to impacts, stains and cleaning chemicals enhances the service life of interior components, and in thermoforming, the sheet maintains uniform wall thickness even in deep draws.
Royalite® R59 is a chemical-resistant PVC/ABS fire-rated extruded sheet capable of withstanding high-impact conditions. Coupled with consistent high-quality color, texture, and gloss for a variety of applications including medical device housings and electrical appliances, Royalite R59 can be custom manufactured in gauges from 0.031” to 0.312”.
Royalite® R57 thermoplastic sheet is a fire-rated, rigid ABS/PVC product specifically developed to meet Federal Aviation Administration requirements. It passes FAR 25.853b at 0.047” and above. It combines its lightweight with very high impact strength, high tensile strength and stiffness, and excellent formability and ductility.
What types of applications are most commonly used with Fire Retardant ABS?
Overhead luggage storage compartment: These compartments require durable materials because they are subjected to quite a bit of strain in normal use. Yet, they also need to be lightweight, because their presence does not add to the aerodynamics or operation of the aircraft. Plastics like Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) or Kydex are excellent materials for these bins.
- Cabin Interiors: High impact, fire-rated thermoplastic materials, and Royalite® thermoplastic materials, are engineered to have the durability, cleaning chemical resistance, and fire resistance required for aircraft interiors. These materials are thermoformed and used as tray tables, armrests, and seat backs.
